What is Formula SAE?
The Formula team routinely participates at the Michigan International Speedway near Detroit. This annual competition allows the students to compete with over 120 other teams from around the world. Industry judges and experts are on-site to oversee and scrutinize each team based on their performance in the two categories of events: Static and Dynamic. Static events include the Design, Cost, and Business presentations events, while the dynamic events include Acceleration, Skidpad, Autocross, and Endurance. Each team is tasked with navigating through the events putting their engineering, business, and marketing skills to the test in order to maximize the points earned and become Formula SAE champions.
The Formula SAE series competitions challenge teams of university undergraduate and graduate students to conceive, design, fabricate, develop, and compete with small, formula-style vehicles. The competitions give teams the chance to demonstrate and prove both their creativity and engineering skills in comparison to teams from other universities around the world.
As of 2021, the decision was made to convert to to Formula EV (Electric) SAE. This is to encourage our students to graduate with knowledge to allow them to be ahead in the industry.
